I fucked up
A few weeks ago, Ubuntu 24 was released, and I was very eager to
try out GNOME 46 (Not Ubuntu 24). I don't like Ubuntu because it
breaks some apps using it's custom themes.
Fast forward, I decided to install without even looking for guides
or red flags someone must have faced.
I went ahead and ran the do-release-upgrade command without hesitation.
I even passed in the -d flag
sudo do-release-upgrade -d
Two hours after I ran the command, the update was stuck at 53%.
I don't fear my system breaking much now because It's already
broken :/. ⏩ I got impatient and terminated the update. Everything
looked fine. I rebooted the system. ⏩ Okay, I checked the /etc/os-release
and it said Ubuntu 23.10. Alright!
I sometimes forget we are in 2024. Solutions to such problem have already been solved.
There are ways, but there are also high chances of corrupting the packages.
After running some commands and rebooting again. I was able to log into
My GNOME 46. Woohoo!!
Aftermath
Me interrupting the upgrade, which is not even recommended by Ubuntu developers
until August 15, had to BREAK the system.
Following apps don't work anymore:
- GNOME Tweaks
- GNOME Extension Manager
- GNOME Calendar (worst)
- many more...
As a developer I'm fine with installed apps being broken. I always prefer
building them locally. GNOME Calendar was available on flatpak, so I was
able to use it. Other apps, I can't use them for now.
In few days, I'll probably shift to Fedora or Debian
